Super Position

The Horse has two riders, one facing forward,
one back.  Insolent, they stare at each
other.  What path did the horse take?

In a similar tale, there is a cat.
Her assassin possessed with urgent ignorance,
Don't open that box! the man said.

Ships call to one another off the waterfront,
not out of loneliness, a ship in love is a wreck.
They share a kinship of distance.

This is the natural defiance of the river strider,
it falls to the atom to observe itself.
An ocean of belief is balanced by a drop of doubt.

Words are symbols, not cement.  Call me a liar.
If there's to be uncertainty, let its mother be my mouth.

    1. Fruit flies flitting along the frothy foliage of an autumn afternoon;
      The sugary scent of decedent, decaying doldrums drives them on.

      Absent are the sharp, clean edges of organization,
      “A place for everything…” like grubs and beetles nestling in the loam.

      And anthills cover dragon’s faces;
      Their ribs and backs drifting down and South.
      Always South.

      South to where the fruit trees lie,
      Humming, crawling things alive,
      Where nothing straightens ‘cept to bend,
      Ensconced in river journey’s end.

  2. I would have replied earlier but It turns out that I haven't checked your blog in quite some time.

    I especially like these lines:

    "it falls to the atom to observe itself.
    An ocean of belief is balanced by a drop of doubt."

    and:

    "If there's to be uncertainty, let its mother be my mouth."

    Observation, uncertainty, doubt. Maybe it's just the scientist in me, but I kind of like the uncertainties. They fertilize questions which gestate into new discoveries.

    I like the imagery of an "ocean of belief" being balanced by a "drop of doubt." It certainly can be a delicate balance.
